Kendall Koppe’s practice stems from an interest in the photographic image and the manner in which it communicates theoretically, visually and psychologically. Utilising a range of media including photography, printmaking, drawing and text he is concerned with the subconscious consumption of a hyperstylized, learned gestural language and the process in which that gesture gathers meaning within a collective psyche. Theatricality and performance are evident throughout Koppe’s practice however never used to deny reality, rather to speak critically about ways of telling. Whether it is photographic, drawn or text he presents the viewer with disarming tableaux often depicting disquieting moments in dramas whose narrative directions remain ambiguous. Originally from New York, Kendall Koppe has been based in Glasgow since 1999, graduating from Fine Art Photography at Glasgow School of Art in 2001 and completed an MA (Photographic Studies) at The University Of Westminster, London in 2005. He is also founder and co-curator of Glasgow-based, artist-run organization Washington Garcia.
